Farron praises council efforts to tackle hate crime

South Lakeland MP Tim Farron has praised the council for passing a motion vowing to tackle hate crime, saying that it sends an "important message" about our area.

The motion was passed unanimously by the Lib Dem-run District Council last week, and pledges that the council will work with the Police and County Council to tackle this problem. The move came following reports of a number of hate crimes across Cumbria.

Tim said: "The council's support for this motion sends an important message that we are an open community that will not tolerate hate crimes.

"It has been extremely concerning to hear of a rise in the number of hate crimes, and is a reminder that we must not be complacent about this serious problem. No-one should live in fear or be subject to abuse simply because of who they are.

"South Lakeland is a wonderful place to live with open, welcoming communities. I am determined that we all work together to stamp out hate crime wherever and whenever it appears. I am grateful to the District Council for taking this action."
