Farron: 'Petrol prices could be slashed by 5p a litre because of our campaign'

South Lakes MP Tim Farron has said he is delighted after the Treasury announced that Cumbria could be part of a fuel derogation scheme after a long running campaign by the MP.

This means that prices at the pump could be cut by 5p per litre. Tim has previously written to the Chancellor and lobbied the Prime Minister on the issue and asked them to make sure Cumbria is involved in any future scheme.

The scheme proposed today, which is similar to that already used in the Scottish islands, is designed to prevent rural drivers paying a premium for fuel.

The Treasury has issued a "call for evidence" and is asking petrol retailers and customers in 35 counties to provide details of fuel prices. The consultation will last until September, and if residents agree with the idea the government will put the plans to the European Commission.

Tim said: "For the last three years I have fought to try and cut fuel prices for people in Cumbria. With this announcement I hope we have moved a step closer to that happening. I have told the government that in rural areas like ours a car is not a luxury, it is a necessity."
