Farron offers to fix South Lakeland’s roads

Following the announcement of an additional £6.2million from the Government to fix the potholes in Cumbria's roads Liberal Democrat MP, Tim Farron, has pledged to get involved and physically help the highways authorities to make the repairs, but only if the Conservative Cumbria County Council ensure that the South Lakes gets its fair share of the investment.

This injection of cash from the Department for Transport has been given to highways authorities to repair the damage to Britain's roads caused by the harsh winter last year with the backing of Liberal Democrat minister Norman Baker. Cumbria has received the fifth biggest allocation of any county in England; however Tim is concerned that South Lakeland will, yet again, lose out when the money is spent.

Historically, the Conservative led council tends to favour the north and west of Cumbria, meaning that those in the South Lakes do not get their fair share. Tim is adamant that this vital cash boost, which is an important Lib Dem success in government, is spread fairly across all of Cumbria.

Commenting Tim said: "After a long harsh winter I'm delighted that the Government has put this money forward to help us sort out our roads. This money must be used to create a long term fix our roads, not to put a short term patch over the potholes.

"However it is crucial that Cumbria County Council spend this money fairly and that the South Lakes gets its fair share. If they do I promise to go out there, put on a high vis jacket and get stuck in to help the highways authorities as they mend South Lakeland's roads."
