Farron encourages 'at risk' patients to get a flu jab this winter

South Lakes MP Tim Farron is encouraging people who are either at risk, or who come into contact with at risk groups, to get their flu jab. This is to ensure they protect themselves and others against the harmful virus this winter.

The flu jab is offered free to people over 65, under-65s with serious long-term health problems, pregnant women and frontline health and social care staff. The vaccine changes every year to fight the latest strains of flu, so even if you had a jab last winter you need another one this year to stay protected. The jab doesn't contain the live virus so it cannot give you the flu.

Tim said: "I would urge anyone who thinks they might be at risk to get the jab early. Flu is very different from just getting a cold - it can be a really serious illness, leading to prolonged stays in hospital and even death.

"Even if you had the jab last year, or have already had the flu, it's important to get the vaccine this year because flu changes every year. Flu is caused by a virus rather than bacteria, so antibiotics don't work once you are ill - and symptoms can come on very suddenly. As soon as your doctor gets in touch, take up the offer and get the vaccine."
