Farron calls on Government to provide better broadband service for South Lakeland

27 May 2009

The Government should be doing more to provide high-speed broadband for rural communities and businesses like those in South Lakeland according to local MP Tim Farron. Mr Farron was commenting on a recent report commissioned by the BBC which revealed that an estimated three million homes in the UK have broadband speeds of less than two megabits per second (2Mbps).

Mr Farron said:

"Having access to high speed broadband is extremely important for rural communities and local businesses. Without broadband, many people who would otherwise be able to work from home are prevented from doing so.

"If the problem is fixed it means a lot more people could work from home which offers a very real way to improve society and prevent our rural communities from turning into ghost towns during the week.

"The Government must take the necessary steps to ensure that rural communities, such as South Lakeland, are allowed to remain viable by providing them with access to a high quality, fast broadband service"
