Farron calls on Defra Secretary to intervene over woodland sale

Plans to stop a popular forest path from being sold to private buyers have been stepped up after South Lakeland MP, Tim Farron, wrote to Defra Secretary, Caroline Spellman, to ask her to intervene and prevent the Forestry Commission from selling Sawrey Ground Forest.

Sawrey Ground Forest, between Hawkshead Hill and the well known beauty spot Tarn Hows, is a popular walk which attracts thousands of visitors each year. The Forestry Commission, which leases the land, looks set to sell the 39 hectares to help meet a national cash shortfall.

Commenting Mr Farron said:

"I'm extremely disappointed that the Forestry Commission is looking to raise a quick buck by selling off Sawrey Ground Forest. This is an historic forest which should be kept for the public.

"Instead of trying to sell off the family silver, the Forestry Commission should be looking to engage more with the National Trust, who has expressed an interest in the area.

"I've written to Caroline Spellman, the new Defra Secretary, to ask her to do all she can to ensure that the Sawrey Ground Forest remains in public ownership so that it can continue to be enjoyed by the thousands of visitors it receives each year."
