Farron calls on councils to mark Armed Forces Day

5 Jun 2013
South Lakes MP Tim Farron has called on the local councils to mark Armed Forces Day to show our appreciation for their service.

Armed Forces Day will be on Saturday, 29 June 2013 and with 24 days to go, Tim is calling on councils throughout the county to mark the event.

The yearly event helps to raise public awareness of the contribution made to our country by those who serve and have served in Her Majesty's Armed Forces. Armed Forces Day also gives the nation an opportunity to 'Show Your Support' for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community: from currently serving troops to service families, veterans and cadets.

Tim is asking councils to follow the lead of South Lakeland District Council and mark the event. Council Chairwomen Councillor Evelyn Westwood (Sedbergh and Kirkby Lonsdale) will be raising a special flag for the occasion above KendalTown Hall.

Tim said: "On Armed Forces Day we have the opportunity to say a heartfelt thank you for the service and sacrifice of our brave men and women. I am asking local councils to show their appreciation by publicly marking the day. From flying a flag above the town hall, to hosting troops or donating to the Royal British Legion or Help for Heroes, there are lots of small things councils could do which would make a big difference."
