Farron backs scheme to help get young people earning or learning

South Lakes MP Tim Farron has welcomed today's announcement by Deputy Prime Minister and Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Nick Clegg of a £1 million fund to get young people in Cumbria who are not in employment, education or training (NEET), earning or learning again.

As part of the Lib Dem's Youth Contract, the Coalition Government will target funding and tailored support at 16 and 17-year-olds with no A* - C GCSEs. Using an innovative payment-by-results system, the scheme is designed to help those who are most affected by periods of long-term unemployment.

Commenting, Tim said: "The Youth Contract is a great way to help those that have been struggling since leaving school get earning or learning. Helping young people to stay in the South Lakes when they leave school has always been a priority for me. Too many feel that they have to leave to find a job. I will continue to fight for more apprenticeships, more well paid jobs and more affordable housing to help young people in our area."
