As Local Newspaper Week takes place (13-19 May),South Lakes MP Tim Farron has today praised local newspapers across Cumbria for being 'the glue that holds our communities together'.

Tim said newspapers like the Westmorland Gazette, North West Evening Mail, Cumberland & Westmorland Herald, News and Star and the Keswick Reminder were integral to local democracy as they kept people across the county informed.

Tim also pointed out that without these local papers issues like the recent arrest of 3 police staff by the Tory Police and Crime Commissioner would not have come to light.

Tim said: "Our local reporters here in Cumbria aren't just writing about our communities, they are part of those communities - they are the glue that keeps our community together. That's the key to a good local newspaper. We are lucky to have so many fantastic papers in our county and long may that continue. I want to thank the staff, editors and everyone involved for their work. Those who've got out of the habit of doing so, should use this week as the opportunity to start buying a local paper once again."
