Children's mental health - Farron calls for action not words

3 Mar 2010

Tim Farron as welcomed today's statement by Professor John Ashton, the Director of Public Health of NHS Cumbria on the matter of children's mental health.

However, he has challenged NHS Cumbria to put its money where its mouth is, as south Cumbria is still without a consultant specialist in mental health for children and young people.

Tim said "I agree with all that Professor Ashton has said today, but my young constituents who need support for mental health conditions are often forced to wait for months to get help and, if they can get help, then have to travel for hours on end to get specialists support outside of south Cumbria.

"NHS Cumbria is right to highlight the importance of mental health amongst children, but they are wrong in their failure to meet their needs locally."
