'We need to see the broadband plan' - Farron

South Lakes MP Tim Farron has called on Cumbria County Council to release their plan for the county's broadband project. Yesterday the council announced that work would start this spring, but no details have been released about which communities will be connected and when.

Cumbria County Council has set a date for their plans to roll-out superfast broadband across the county, aiming to provide it to 93% of homes by 2015. The council signed a contract to deliver improved broadband back in November 2012 after receiving £40 million of government funding with a further £30 million of investment from BT.

The council's cabinet has now agreed on an implementation plan and aim to use the money to ensure most homes and businesses across Cumbria benefit from the funding. They have now received State Aid approval and work is expected to start in Spring 2013.

Tim said: "Yesterday's announcement is welcome news but we need to know details now. They plan to start work in a couple of months but we have still not been told which communities will be covered and which won't be.

"It is vital that the County Council ensures that broadband is rolled out across the county and that there is a fair and equal geographical spread."
