Local MP Tim Farron has welcomed a national tourism survey published this week showing the success of visitor attractions in South Lakeland.

The report by Visit England shows there were more than 2.3 million visits to visitor attractions in South Lakeland in 2015. This represents a 3% increase on the year before.

The report also highlights the success of Bowness-based business Windermere Lake Cruises, which was the 6th most-visited paid attraction in England in 2015. Tim has written to Windermere Lake Cruises to congratulate the company.

Tim said: "These visitor attractions add real value to our area as a tourist destination. South Lakeland offers not only some of the most beautiful natural scenery in the country, but is also one of the leading rural cultural destinations. Whatever your interests, there is something to visit and do in South Lakeland.

"The tourist trade in our area was badly hit by last winter's floods, and the year so far has been a difficult time for many. However, these figures show the strength of the local tourist industry and it is already clear that the area is bouncing back.

"My thanks go to all those whose hard work has contributed to the success of these visitor attractions. The success of Windermere Lake Cruises stands out in particular. I'd also like to thank the district council for their work promoting tourism in the area."
