Tim Farron MP demands action to stop local
Tim Farron MP has called on the Learning and Skills Commission (LSC) to clarify its position in regards to funding for sixth-form colleges in South Lakeland and Eden, after it was suggested that those providing A-level courses in the area would have their funding cut.
Schools are bracing themselves for potential teaching staff redundancies following a recent letter to head teachers in March in which it was suggested funding would be capped, despite a rise in the number of pupils. Kendal College could also have its funding cut for some qualifications for 16-18 year olds.
South Lakes MP Tim Farron said: "It is an appalling situation that despite the rise in pupil numbers, schools in the local area will receive no additional funding, and that some might even see their funding cut.
"The LSC has apologised for the confusion it has caused with its letter to heads and principals, but the schools in question are no closer to finding out what their financial situation is going to be at the start of the next financial year.
"They are now faced with the prospect of laying off teachers or turning away students. The final years of education are vital in setting young people on the paths they want to follow as adults, and local students deserve a better deal.
"The LSC needs to make clear to the schools affected what their financial situation will be, so that preparations can be made and cuts can be avoided."
