MP Welcomes Local Jobs Figures
Local MP Tim Farron has welcomed the latest statistics showing that the employment rate in Westmorland and Lonsdale puts it in the top 2% of all constituencies in the country.
The latest figures show that there were 245 unemployed claimants in Westmorland and Lonsdale in April 2016. This figure represents a rate of 0.6% of the economically active population aged 16 to 64, putting the employment rate in the constituency 12th highest out of all 650 UK parliamentary constituencies.
This includes 115 people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance and 130 people who were claiming Universal Credit but were not in employment. There were 50 claimants aged 18-24 in the constituency in the same period.
Tim said: "These figures show that our area is one of the best places in the country to get a job, and this is testament to the hard work and success of local businesses. This has been a difficult period following the floods in December, but with the A591 now fixed and Cumbria back 'open for business', there should be a bright future ahead for local businesses and employees.
"I'd like to thank the local businesses which provide these jobs, as well as SLDC which has worked hard to support new business start-ups in our area."
