MP welcomes £198,000 of Olympic legacy money for grass-roots sport in South Lakeland
South Lakes MP Tim Farron has welcomed the news that three fantastic local projects have been given £198,829 as part of the Olympic legacy. Tim has dedicated these successes to the late Council Leader Brendan Jameson, who passed away last year.
3 sports projects in South Lakeland are among 10 sports clubs in Cumbria celebrating London 2012 legacy investments from Sport England to improve local sports facilities. £2.3 million of National Lottery funding has today been awarded to sports projects in the North West, with £590,662 of the funding being received by sports clubs in Cumbria.
In South Lakeland the following projects received funding:
- £21,558 to renovate the sports hall at Kendal Lads & Girls Club.
- £27,271 to develop an extension to the Brockbeck MUGA, Kirkbarrow.
- £150,000 to upgrade the changing facilities at Sedbergh Pool.
Tim said: "This is fantastic news for grass roots, community sport in South Lakeland. Brendan was tireless in his efforts to ensure that the Olympics left its mark on South Lakeland - he was determined that there would be a real Olympics legacy for young people in our area. These successes should be dedicated to his memory. Many young people tell me that we need more facilities so this money is really welcome and will make a massive difference. I know that the funding for Sedbergh pool is incredibly welcome.
"The Lads & Girls club are fantastic and do innovative and inspirational work with young people in Kendal. I am also delighted that Kirkbarrow Residents' Association has been successful with it's bid for an extended MUGA - this is an excellent and proactive residents association making a real difference. I'm glad to have helped and supported them in their bid. Many young people on the estate have raised this issue with me at my regular football youth surgeries so I'm delighted that this money has been secured and we can try and fix the problem!"
