MP warns Kendal residents about scam calls
South Lakes MP Tim Farron is concerned that scammers have been phoning residents pretending to be from Microsoft.
Tim's warning comes after Cumbria Police reveal they have received complaints from members of the public about phone scammers claiming to represent the computing firm.
They are being told that that they have a virus on their computer and are being talked into granting remote access to their computer. Once a scammer has access to the computer, they can then steal passwords and bank details.
Tim said: "I would really urge computer users to watch out for this scam-no legitimate business would contact customers and demand personal or financial information. They should only ever get in touch if you have contacted them first.
"The police are advising local folk not to engage at all if they receive a call purporting to be from Microsoft-or any other business asking for this kind of information. Hang up or close the door if you're not sure-it's not rude, it's a sensible way to keep safe."
The police are advising anyone with information or concerns to contact them, Trading Standards, or Action Fraud. If in doubt, call the police non-emergency line on 101 for advice.
