MP signs cross-party letter demanding urgent investment for South Lakes schools

Local MP Tim Farron has signed a cross-party letter calling for Theresa May to plug the funding gaps faced by local schools as one of her final acts as Prime Minister.

Last week, the Institute for Fiscal Studies estimated that a one-off increase of £1.8bn was the minimum required to ensure there is sufficient funding to meet the cost pressures faced by schools.

Recently, 16 head teachers from schools in Kendal sent out a joint letter to parents asking them to lobby the Government over the crisis. In the letter, they described the real effects that heavy funding cuts have had on their schools - fewer teaching staff, less support for children with special educational needs, and fewer subject choices.

Tim said: "Investment in our education is an investment in our country's future.

"So, to underfund our schools in this way is not just cruel but it's also incredibly stupid in undervaluing that which is our greatest asset

"Pupils across the country are experiencing half-day teaching timetables; crumbling buildings; larger class sizes and little to no special educational needs provision.

"As one of her last acts as Prime Minister, Theresa May has an historic opportunity to change this and leave a legacy to our young people."
