South Lakes MP Tim Farron joined local councillors on Stricklandgate in Kendal this lunchtime to gather signatures for the petition to save Kendal Post Office.

The big push for signatures comes as Post Office Ltd. are set to launch a consultation later this month on whether the town's main existing post office should be moved into the much smaller WHSmith store.

The petition has now gathered well over 3,500 signatures in total.

Last month, Conservative ministers revealed that they backed the closure. In a letter to Tim, post offices minister Kelly Tolhurst dismissed concerns about the amount of space in the WHSmith store in Kendal, and instead painted a rosy picture of Post Office Ltd's agreements with WHSmith.

Tim said: "It was a great way to start the New Year getting out there and drumming up support for this campaign which is so important to local people.

"Public opinion out there is clear: the plans are devoid of all common sense and should be scrapped.

"Once the post office bosses actually come up here and see that there isn't enough room to swing a cat in WHSmith, they'll see that these plans are unworkable.

"I am determined to continue leading from the front as we fight against the Conservative Government and Post Office Ltd over this closure during the official consultation period."
