MP is named as safer street champion by a national charity
South Lakes MP Tim Farron has been named as a 'Campaign Champion' by a national charity for his work on road safety and sustainable transport.
The charity, Sustrans, works with communities, policy-makers and partner organisations so that people can choose healthier, cleaner and cheaper journeys and enjoy better, safer spaces where they live. They work on projects to encourage people to walk, cycle, and use public transport, to give people the choice of "travelling in ways that benefit their health and the environment".
This news follows on from an announcement in July, when Tim received a national road safety award by the charity Brake for his long-term campaign to resurface his constituency's roads and make them a safer place to travel on. The charity praised Tim's work in helping to make the A684 safer and his work on bringing '20s plenty zones' to residential areas in Kendal.
They also mentioned his work on supporting cycling. After hearing about the award Sustrans got in touch and asked Tim to become one of their campaign champions. The group of cross party MPs and Lords will work together to support sustainable and green transport.
As part of the Campaign, Sustrans and Tim are calling for:
- dedicated funding available for walking and cycling infrastructure and behaviour change programmes
- 20mph speed limit in built up areas
- transformation of local walking and cycling routes
Tim said: "I am delighted to have been named as a champion by Sustrans. I hope this shows that our campaigning to protect public transport, improve cycling provision and make residential streets safer, really is working and I will keep doing all I can to keep the momentum going."
