MP calls for Tour of Britain to come back to Cumbria

South Lakes MP Tim Farron has called on the organisers of the Tour of Britain to agree to come back to Cumbria next time.

The tour brought with it a multi-million pound cash injection for the county, and Tim is keen to bring it back - a move tour organisers have not ruled out.

According to Cumbria County Council: "ITV4 described it as the best stage in its coverage."

The 115-mile route started at Carlisle city centre before the cyclists raced through Wigton, Aspatria, Dearham, Workington, Whitehaven and Keswick, finishing off in Kendal.

Tim said: "We've never before had the honour of staging an entirely Cumbrian stage of the Tour of Britain. Thanks to the tour, images of our county were beamed all over the world.

"I hope the organisers agree to bring the tour back to Cumbria. It is fantastic to see Bradley Wiggins cycling through Kendal, exciting for local residents and good for our economy. I also think it was brilliant for local young people to see world class athletes - it can only inspire a generation to get involved in sport. I hope we can help to make Cumbria another stage of the Tour of Britain next year."
