Local MP Tim Farron has called on both Thomas Cook and Arcadia Group to be clear about their future plans for their stores and their staff based in the South Lakes

Last week travel operator Thomas Cook announced debts of £900 million just four weeks after it had obtained approval for a separate £100 million of funding from their banks. The news sent the company's share price tumbling, losing 75 per cent of its value dropping to about 10p per share.

This follows on from the Sir Philip Green family-owned Arcadia retailing group which includes Top Shop,Burton, Evans, BHS and Dorothy Perkins, warning of tougher conditions on the high street as his holding company slipped to a loss.

Sir Philip said he would close up to 260 stores across his portfolio over the next three years unless landlords agreed to his demands for better terms.

Tim has called on both businesses to let our community know their future plans.Arcadiahave four stores in Kendal, and Thomas Cook have a branch on Stricklandgate.

Commenting today Tim said: "I have today written to both businesses asking them for assurances over their future plans. I want to protect local jobs and I am keen to work with both businesses to protect jobs and keep local shops open."
