A new campaign, launched today, which encourages young people to take up science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM subjects) at school and beyond, is being backed by South Lakes MP Tim Farron.

These STEM subjects are considered by many academics and economists to be vital to the growth of the local, regional and national economy.

The 'Your Life' campaign, launched by the government, involves 170 leading businesses and institutions pledging to do more to highlight the career opportunities open to those studying STEM subjects, committing to create over 2,000 new entry level positions including apprenticeships, graduate jobs or paid work experience posts.

Welcoming the campaign Tim, said: "Rising numbers of people are taking maths and physics A-levels - but there are still too few.

"Too many teenagers, especially girls, don't realise that maths and physics can open doors everywhere. This new campaign will help inspire young people into getting jobs in these exciting sectors.

"Creating jobs and giving our young people the skills they need to succeed in sectors like science, tech and engineering are key parts of our long-term economic plan to build a stronger, more competitive economy and secure a better and brighter future for the country."
