MP and councillors join together to call for Kendal speeding summit

South Lakes MP Tim Farron has joined with local councillors Giles Archibald and Matthew Severn to call for a "Kendal speeding summit", from which they hope major action will come to deal with speeding and traffic issues throughout the town.

Tim, Giles and Matt highlighted a series of areas which they'd like the summit to examine. Starting with speeding issues on Sedbergh Road, Windermere Road, Greenside and Fellside and a series of other areas in Kendal.

Tim and the councillors will be inviting Cumbria's Police Commissioner and senior managers and staff from both Cumbria County Council and South Lakeland District Council to come together with councillors to discuss how we can deal with speeding issues.

Another issue that will be raised at the meeting is the campaign, run by Councillor Clare Feeney-Johnson and local residents to do with concerns about speeding on Aynam Road.

Residents on Greenside and Underbarrow Road also have concerns about The Waste Transfer Site and Tim will also be inviting SITA, the private company that run the facility to the summit.

The team are mindful that any plan does not clog and add traffic to major routes, but are pushing to bring all sides around the table to deal with traffic issues in town.

This morning Tim has written to the various agencies asking them to attend the summit.

Tim said: "I hope that if we can bring all sides around the table we can work together for a solution. I want to make sure that explore every option and that the councils are doing all in the power to deal with residents' concerns.

"I know that Councillors Giles Archibald, Matthew Severn and Clare Feeney-Johnson have been working tirelessly with residents on these issues and the time is right for a summit of all parties involved.'

"I hope that this summit will help bring these long running campaigns run by all three to a successful conclusion."

Kendal Town Councillor Matthew Severn commented: "Every resident I speak to tells me that speeding on Windermere Road is a major issue. I will keep working with residents to tackle it; I hope that this summit will bring about real change. It will help us bring everyone to the table and hammer out a solution that works for the residents and businesses in the town.

I am campaigning to try and bring a speed camera to Windermere Road, so I hope this meeting with the councils and the Police Commissioner will move this forward."

South Lakeland District Councillor Giles Archibald added: "This is a long running issue for residents of Fellside that I and John McCreesh have been working on for some time."
