South Cumbrian MP Tim Farron visited a leading local caravan park on Friday to celebrate English Tourism Week. Tim praised the Lake District as "the jewel in the crown of British tourism" and paid tribute to the thousands of local residents who are involved in the industry.

Tim visited Skelwith Fold Caravan park in Ambleside to meet the owners, staff and visitors and see for himself the beautiful surroundings of the park.

English Tourism Week ran from 25th March until the 2nd April 2017, and was an opportunity for the industry to celebrate and publicise English tourism.

More than 40 million tourists visit Cumbria each year, and the industry is worth more than £2.6billion to the local economy. The tourist industry supports the equivalent of more than 35,000 full-time jobs.

Tim said: "Every year, millions of tourists come to the Lake District to enjoy the beautiful scenery and fantastic cultural offerings of our area. This brings in billions of pounds to the local economy and supports local jobs and businesses. English Tourism Week was a great opportunity to promote our area, and it was great to visit Skelwith Fold Caravan Park on Friday and see their success. It is the friendly, welcoming attitude of the local people who run the places to stay, eat and visit that makes a trip to the Lake District so special."
