Four weeks left until flood grant deadline

3 Mar 2017

With just four weeks left until the deadline, local MP Tim Farron is encouraging all residents who were affected by last winter's floods to apply for a flood grant of up to £5000.

South Lakeland District Council has already approved more than £2million worth of work designed to make homes more flood resilient. The Council has so far received more than 1000 applications for the grants, which can be worth up to £5000.

The deadline for applications is the 31st March. Residents who think they may be eligible but who have not yet applied are urged to do so as soon as possible. Council officers will continue to hold weekly drop-in sessions at Kendal Town Hall on Wednesdays between 1.30pm and 5.30pm until the end of March to offer advice and support to flood grant applicants.

The funds are provided by the government and administered by the council. Of the 2358 properties in South Lakeland that were flooded last winter, it is estimated that around 1900 meet the government's eligibility criteria.

Tim said: "This is the final chance for residents who have not claimed their £5000 grant to make an application to help make their home more flood resilient in the future. The floods last winter were devastating for our area, leaving residents and businesses facing massive damage to their properties. These grants can help to ensure that homes and businesses are better protected in the future. The council is providing help and advice to anyone considering applying, so go along now and make sure to get an application in by the deadline."
