Fifth lowest unemployment rate in country shows strength of local businesses

16 Nov 2016

With the constituency enjoying the fifth lowest unemployment rate in the country, Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron has paid tribute to local businesses for their hard work and success.

Data released today shows that the constituency has an unemployment rate of just 0.5%, compared to a national average of 2.4%.

There were 204 unemployed claimants in the constituency last month. This figure is 15 lower than the equivalent figure for a year ago, representing a fall in the unemployment level of almost 7%.

Tim said: "I am delighted by this news, which shows the strength of the local economy. South Lakeland has faced a difficult year, but these figures show that local businesses have bounced back from the floods stronger than ever. My thanks go to residents and business owners for all their hard work.

"I'd also like to thank the District Council for their fantastic work supporting small businesses and start-ups. These employment figures show the difference that work is making."
