Farron welcomes record number of warmer homes

Westmorland and Lonsdale MP, Tim Farron has welcomed figures that 6,588 homes in his constituency have had either received free loft or cavity wall insulation to help make them warmer and lower carbon emissions since 2008.

Under the Carbon Emissions Reduction Target (CERT) energy companies are obliged to help households in England and Wales reduce their use of electricity and gas to lower their carbon emissions.

Suppliers are required to concentrate at least 40% of their activity on vulnerable and low-income households, such as people over 70.

Commenting this afternoon, Tim said: "It is great news that this Carbon Emissions Reduction Target has enabled over 6,000 homes to go green and save money. Thanks to this duty on energy companies to insulate houses without cost to the homeowner, many households across the South Lakes will have lower energy bills while keeping their houses warmer.

"The Liberal Democrats have worked extremely hard to ensure that from this autumn, the Green Deal will continue this work, helping every home and business in across South Lakeland to insulate themselves properly over the coming years.

"With the Green Deal, the Coalition Government is doing the right thing for the environment, household budgets and the economy. Not only does this mean lower energy bills for everyone but this huge investment will create green jobs and investment which leave a lasting legacy."
