Local MP Tim Farron has welcomed a fall in the number of unemployed people in Westmorland and Lonsdale.

The number of unemployed claimants in the constituency has fallen from 245 in May to 236 in June.

The latest figures mean Westmorland and Lonsdale has the 11th highest employment rate of all 650 constituencies in the UK. Just 0.6% of the economically active population between 16-64 is unemployed, compared to an average of 2.4% nationally.

Tim said: "This is good news for local people. Our area is a great place for businesses to start up and to expand, and this is helping to create jobs. My thanks go to the local entrepreneurs and business people who work hard to set up successful businesses in the South Lakes, as well as to SLDC for their work supporting small businesses. The council is well on track to meet its target of creating 1000 affordable homes and 1000 new jobs."
