Local MP Tim Farron has welcomed the Government's decision to launch a consultation on an opt-out organ donation system.

Back in October, the Prime Minister announced that England would adopt an opt-out organ donation system - something which Tim has been campaigning for since 2013.

Currently both Scotland and Wales have an opt-out organ donation system.

According to the NHS, 457 people died in England last year while waiting for an organ transplant.

Tim said: "Today's announcement from the Department for Health is great news for the six thousand people who are currently on the organ donor waiting list.

"Switching to an opt-out system for organ donation will provide a lifeline for hundreds of patients.

"This is a campaign we've been fighting for a long time and has picked up a lot of support locally.

"I want to pay tribute to Rachael and Chris Hogg who have campaigned tirelessly through their charity Kendal Organ Donor Town to help us reach this stage."
