Farron wants to hear from farmers after NFU modulation concern

Local MP Tim Farron has asked to hear from local farmers after a proposal to switch 15% from direct support payments to fund the Rural Development Programme (RDP) has emerged as the biggest concern to farmers on Common Agricultural Policy reform according the NFU.

Modulation is the transfer of EU CAP funds from Pillar 1 (guarantee expenditure and single farm payments) to Pillar 2 (rural development and agri-environmental schemes).

The NFU recently canvassed 2,000 farmers during a series of meetings across England who reacted with dismay at the government's suggestion to take the maximum 15% from direct support to rural development.

A consultation is due later this year on how RDP money should be spent and the NFU has urged the government to make competitiveness key in a shift in thinking on how the funds should be spent.
