Farron to join local school's 'walking bus' initiative
Local MP Tim Farron will be joining a group of schoolchildren from Selside School tomorrow on their 'walking bus' to encourage more children to walk to school. This event takes place to highlight National Walk to School Week.
Mr Farron has been invited by the local school to take part in the scheme, which encourages parents to walk their children to school. The basic idea is that a group of children walk to school together with accompanying adults to ensure their safety. The scheme also encourages the children to keep fit and benefits the environment by the reduced use of cars on the school run.
Commenting Mr Farron said:
"I'm delighted that Selside School have invited me to take part in their walking bus. The walking bus is a simple idea which any parent, teacher or interested party can set up and is a great way of encouraging children to walk safely to school. It's a wonderful initiative that other schools will be keen to follow - especially in rural areas like ours"
"Children who live too far from the school to walk can also join in by finding a local car park where parents could drop them off to meet the walking bus so that at least they can walk some of the way.
"The walking bus is an opportunity for fresh air, exercise and a chat with friends that reduces the number of vehicles at the school gates and helps benefit the environment."
