Local MP Tim Farron has thanked hardworking local councillor Heidi Halliday for her 'outstanding contribution', following the news that Heidi is stepping down from her role as a district councillor as her term as a county councillor comes to an end this May.

Heidi was first elected to South Lakeland District Council in 2011, to represent Ambleside and Grasmere. She was then elected to the County Council in 2013. Heidi also served as the Portfolio Holder for Housing on the district council. Heidi has decided to step down from the District council when her term as a County Councillor comes to an end this May. Heidi and her husband run the post office and shop in Grasmere.

Will Clark has been selected as the Lib Dem candidate in the County Council election, while Vicky Hughes is the Lib Dem candidate for the District election. Both live within the ward.

Heidi said: "It's been an honour and a privilege to serve my community as a county and district councillor over the last six years. However, with a young family and a busy business to run, I could no longer commit the amount of time that is required to do this job properly. I have therefore had to take the difficult decision to step down from the District Council as my term on the County Council comes to an end.

"I remain a member of the Liberal Democrats and will continue to support the party. Will Clark and Vicky Hughes will make excellent councillors and have my full support in the upcoming elections."

Tim said: "I'd like to thank Heidi for her outstanding contribution over the years. She has been an excellent local councillor, working hard for her community on both the district and county councils.

"I remember visiting Grasmere shortly after the devastating floods in 2015. Heidi's own business had been badly hit, but she continued to work tirelessly to help out others who had been affected. This sums up Heidi's determination to work for her community and help those in need.

"I wish Heidi all the best for the future. We will miss her but I know she will continue to support Will and Vicky, and will remain involved in the community."
