Farron praises staff at hospital's 25th anniversary celebration
Local MP Tim Farron today joined hospital staff, board members and patients to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Westmorland General Hospital. In his speech, he praised the hospital staff for their work, and added that he will remain permanently vigilant against any plans to cut services from the area.
At an afternoon tea at the hospital, Tim and the executive chief nurse Sue Smith both gave short speeches to guests, including many staff who have worked at the hospital for the entire time. Tim also met a number of local people who had used the hospital, including the very first patient ever through the hospital's doors.
Earlier this week Tim Farron submitted a motion to parliament, praising the hospital staff and thanking local people for their efforts campaigning to protect services when they were under threat. Just last summer, Tim led a successful campaign to keep the Kentmere mental health ward open at the hospital.
Tim said: "This 25th anniversary is a special occasion not just for the hospital and staff here, but for our whole community. It is remarkable what a special place this hospital has in the hearts and minds of our community - and is a tribute to the outstanding care and dedication of local hospital staff.
"Like many local people, my kids were born at this hospital and over the years I've been many times when loved ones have needed care. I am always impressed by the excellent care that has been provided, and know what a difference this hospital makes to our community.
"But this anniversary is also a reminder of the fact that it was never guaranteed that we would reach this 25th anniversary milestone. We must remain permanently vigilant against the danger that vital local services will be removed or downgraded. I will always fight to protect our local hospital, and know that local people will join me."
