Farron: 'Long overdue news' that Cumbria Police drop charges on two staff in expenses inquiry

South Lakes MP Tim Farron has welcomed the news that two people quizzed by police probing the alleged leaking of Cumbria crime commissioner Richard Rhodes's expenses details will not face any criminal action. Tim called this news 'long overdue' and then called on the police to drop any charges on the final two staff currently on bail.

A 50-year-old woman, who is a Cumbria Police employee, was detained on suspicion of data protection offences and misconduct in a public office. A 54-year-old man from Penrith was also arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice. Both have had their bail dates extended to July 5th.

It has been confirmed that two other police employees who were arrested will face no criminal action and are no longer suspended from the force.

Tim said: "Whistleblowers need to be protected and not prosecuted. It is welcome news that two staff will not face charges. But a further two are still on bail. Arresting people for doing a public service and releasing this information is deeply worrying and the charges against the two remaining staff should be dropped."
