Farron: Europe "Crucial" For Local Farmers

Remaining in Europe is "crucial" for the future of farming in South Lakeland, according to Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron.

Figures released by the government last week show that over 90% of the UK's lamb and mutton exports go to the EU. These sales face an uncertain future if the UK does not remain in the EU.

In response to a recent parliamentary question by Tim, the Farming Minister said that the average farm business income for hill farms in Cumbria was £14,400.

Tim said: "This is a difficult period for hill farmers, and at a time when many are struggling to make ends meet the last thing they need is the added uncertainty of pulling out of their largest export market. The EU provides us with access to the world's largest single market, which is crucial for local farmers here in South Lakeland. This would be put at risk if we were to leave as there would be massive uncertainty about our future trade arrangements, and it is the farmers who would pay the price for this. The EU also provides local farmers with additional support through direct payments, without which many farms in our area would not be viable. I will be voting 'remain' to support local farmers."
