Farron encourages local people to take up cycling

On National Cycle to Work day, South Lakes MP Tim Farron is encouraging local residents to get out on their bikes. Tim hopes that the success of the Tour of Britain last week will encourage more people to get in the saddle.

Last week the likes of Sir Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish tackled the gruelling 116 mile ride taking in the Lake District's iconic sights, which ended in Kendal.

One in seven people in South Lakeland cycle at least once a month, either for recreation of to get to work.

Almost one in twenty South Lakes residents currently cycle to work at least once per month.

Tim said: "A sprint finish up Beast Banks isn't everyone's cup of tea, but taking up cycling can be a great way to get around, have fun, and stay fit!

"Whether it's cycling to work or just for enjoyment, I'd like to encourage local residents to get out on their bikes. We've got miles of roads, bridleways and even specialist mountain bike tracks in the forests, so there's something out there for everyone.

"Lib Dem councillors have worked hard to secure new cycle paths in our area, with plans for more. Thanks to their efforts, it is easier than ever to get out and about on two wheels.

"It was fantastic to have the Tour of Britain visit our area, and I hope seeing some of the world's top cyclists racing through where we live will have inspired people to take up cycling."
