Farron calls on other supermarkets to follow Morrisons' lead

Following the news that Morrisons have committed to buy all their fresh meat from the UK, South Lakes MP Tim Farron has called on the other 'big four' supermarkets to follow suit.

Morrisons move last week comes after a similar move from the Co-op. And local supermarket chain Booths buys 80% of its fresh meat from the North West of England.

Recent research indicates that two-thirds of shopper would prefer to buy British, but that only around half of the fresh meat sold in supermarkets is from the UK.

Commenting, Tim said: "Farmers across the South Lakes and around the country produce top quality produce. It's no wonder people want to buy British, and its right that our supermarkets should support local farmers and help them to thrive.

"But buying British isn't just good for British farmers, it's also good for animal welfare and our environment.

"Farming has struggled in recent years, and changes to farm payments after Brexit are casting a heavy shadow over the industry. This news from Morrisons is definitely a chink of light."
