Farron calls for change to planning law so that all new homes get superfast broadband
South Lakes MP Tim Farron has tabled a motion in Parliament calling on the planning law to be changed so that developers are required to provide superfast broadband for all new homes.
In a letter to the Housing and Planning Minister Alok Sharma, Tim suggested that developers should be obliged to provide superfast broadband, alongside the water and electricity supplies they already provide.
Tim said: "I'm proud of the fact that under the local Lib Dem-run council lots of new affordable homes continue to be built in the South Lakes.
"I never tire of hearing how pleased people are to move into new houses, especially when they can stay in the area that they have grown up in.
"However, many people who have recently moved into brand new homes have contacted me about the poor broadband service they are receiving.
"This should not be the case.
"Superfast broadband is almost a necessity for most people, and therefore it should be provided from the beginning.
"It would cost only a little more to install yet make lives significantly better for many people, as well as avoiding expensive and disruptive works down the line."
