Farron: '24hrs to save our NHS' as secret plans for cuts to local NHS revealed

7 Jun 2017

Tim Farron is urging local residents to vote against damaging Conservative cuts tomorrow, as a leaked document reveals secret plans for massive cuts to health services run by the Morecambe Bay Trust.

Closing wards and services, extending waiting times, and stopping some treatments are all being considered by senior NHS officials in controversial plans to curb spending, the Health Service Journal has revealed.

The controversial measures are reportedly being discussed privately between top officials from NHS England and NHS Improvement and health managers in 14 areas of the country with the highest levels of overspending, including here in Morecambe Bay.

The Health Service Journal reports that NHS leaders from these areas have been told to examine "difficult decisions" and "think the unthinkable", including modelling changes which are normally avoided as they are too unpleasant, unpopular or controversial.

Tim said: "We have 24 hours left to save our NHS as we know it.

"These savage proposed cuts to frontline services show why we cannot allow Conservative underfunding of our NHS to continue.

"Without more investment in the NHS, waiting times will increase, availability of treatments will be reduced and patients will suffer.

"We don't need to accept this. The Liberal Democrats will stand up to Theresa May on the NHS to ensure our hospitals receive the funding they need.

"I will always fight to protect local health services. Use your vote tomorrow to back our NHS - vote Liberal Democrat."
