South Lakes MP Tim Farron is calling for the government to guarantee the rights of EU citizens already living in the UK, ahead of negotiations with the EU about post-Brexit arrangements. This would reassure EU citizens in the UK, as well as UK citizens living abroad who also face the same uncertainty about their future.

Tim has joined MPs from six different parties to add his name to calls for the Prime Minister to guarantee the rights of EU citizens already living in the UK. Across England there are currently around 55,000 EU nationals working in the NHS and 84,000 working in social care.

Tim said: "EU citizens who have made their home in the UK and British citizens living in Europe all desperately need reassurance about what will happen post-Brexit. It is wrong for the government to use these people as nothing more than negotiating pawns.

"We all know the contribution that EU citizens make day in day out to our NHS and social care. Here in the South Lakes, many EU workers are also vital to the local tourist industry.

"The government should act now to give EU citizens currently living in the UK the right to stay post-Brexit, which would also help to ensure the rights of Brits living abroad to stay there. These are people who are living, working, paying taxes and often bringing up their own children abroad. The government must put an end to their uncertainty."
