MP tables amendment for local authorities to make all new homes affordable
Last night, Cumbrian MP Tim Farron put down an amendment to the Government's Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill which would give local councils the power to ensure that all new housing is affordable.
However the amendment was defeated by 8 votes to 5, with every Conservative member of the committee voting against.
Speaking after the vote, Tim said: "Time and time again we see developers being able to run rings around local authorities to get out of building homes that local people and families can actually afford.
"Ridiculously extortionate house prices in Cumbria are leading to young people being forced to move away, causing a staffing crisis for local businesses.
"I'm disappointed that Conservative MPs have voted along party lines rather than voting for what is best for the future of our communities."
