MP calls for better mobile phone service in the South Lakes

27 Nov 2017

South Lakes MP Tim Farron has tabled a motion in Parliament calling for a change in the law so that all parts of the UK are served by at least one mobile provider.

Tim has submitted the motion after being contacted by several constituents who say that poor mobile phone signal is seriously hampering their businesses, as they require good mobile phone signal for their customers to pay by card.

In a letter to the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Tim stated that the local economy should "not lie at the mercy of the commercial providers of the required reception".

Tim said: "With more local businesses relying on mobile phones, the standard of reception is becoming more and more important.

"But many businesses and homes in our area are getting left behind by poor mobile phone signal.

"That's why I've written to the Secretary of State, asking her to consider the possibility of changing the law so that all parts of the UK have to be served by at least one mobile provider."
