Farron welcomes local jobs market boost

17 Aug 2016

Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron has welcomed the latest figures showing an improvement in the local jobs market, putting the employment rate in the area in the top 1% of all constituencies.

Data released today by the House of Commons Library shows that the area has an unemployment rate of just 0.5%, compared to 2.4% nationally. This means that Westmorland and Lonsdale constituency has the 5th lowest unemployment of all 650 UK constituencies.

The total number of claimants in Westmorland and Lonsdale in July was 211. This figure is lower than in June, and also lower relative to the equivalent figure for a year ago.

Tim said: "This is fantastic news for local people, for the economy and for businesses. Our area is leading the way for tackling unemployment and helping people to find work.

"The floods last winter set our area back, but it is clear that we are now bouncing back even stronger than before. These figures are a credit to the resilience of local businesses which provide these jobs.

"My thanks go also to the District Council for their work supporting small businesses across South Lakeland."
