Cross-party campaign succeeds in getting compensation for bereaved families of NHS and social care workers

South Lakes MP Tim Farron has welcomed last night's announcement from the Health Secretary that bereaved families of NHS and social care staff will receive £60,000 compensation.

Last month, Tim joined over 50 MPs from different parties in writing to the Government calling for a compensation scheme for frontline workers during the coronavirus crisis.

Tim said: "No amount of money could ever replace a loved one, but it's really welcome that families of those who have died on the front-line in NHS & social care will now be given strong financial support at a time of unimaginable hurt.

"Now, the Government needs to go further and include the families of all key workers who die on the frontline.

"The scheme should also match that given to the Armed Forces, covering pension benefits and funeral costs."
